A Brief Girlfriend
I'm told they have decided just to be friends. She is here in the back carriage away from all the rest. A
nice girl. Pretty.. I can see why they call her "Elf." But more than pretty. I can see I would like this girl. No fashion magazine aura around
her, but a face at rest which has some contentment. It has not settled in a pout, not resentful or defensive or snooty. Just a certain peace.
But also on her own in this carriage, away from her morning friends. She is hurting, and I am sad.
I remember these times. And I did it too, to a pretty girl.
Mary
All three get off the train together- the two boys and the sister of one. The elf has sprited away and in her absence Mary walks hopefully alongside. But intent in conversation, he does not even notice.
Mary walks slower, falling behind. Disappointment woodens her walking. Hurt can make you stiffen and slump at the same time. She is a smaller girl as she hurries hurt away from the ticket gates.
