The Love of a Dog

One Man's Web > Where
I Live > The Love of a Dog
The old man sits with his dead arm on the side of the chair. The fingers are cemented into a fist by arthritis and stroke. The aging terrier lives on his knee. She licks his immobile
fingers as though she were seeking to heal a wound. When she rests she wraps her head
round the end of his fist to keep him warm. She gazes out the window and then dozes with him. In the night she sleeps at the end of his bed.
They went on holidays recently... but the dog stayed with friends. His
hand hurt. He could not bare his wife to touch it. Now they are home, and
the hand has been licked well again.
