Griffith

After a very relaxing  rest day, and tea at the pub, today’s stage was the 120km from Ariah Park to Griffith. Ariah Park was the location of the first bulk wheat by rail experiments way back in 1916. I passed through Ardlethan, which claims to be the home of the Australian Kelpie, and Barellan, which was home to Evonne Goolagong, has the Big Tennis Racquet, and also has the CWA’s first rest house in Australia.

Friends Ros and Fozzie accompanied me for about 30km, after which a broken spoke rather limited Fozzie’s options. I enjoyed their company, and riding in a (little) bunch, and went on to have the fastest average speed for the trip; 23.5kph. Ros rode home alone uphill into the wind, while Fozzie hitched a ride from a friendly service station owner.

The last 20 km into Griffith was through the irrigation area, and often accompanied by the heady fumes of wine in the making.

Tomorrow’s destination is Hay.
